General Purpose
This position is responsible for developing the technical skills necessary to progress through the Lineworker training program. The individual in this position has successfully completed 3 years of the apprenticeship program. This position will continue to receive training through a variety of methods including but not limited to formal classroom environment and on-the-job training. This position will be under the direction of a qualified lineworker, crew leader or supervisor.

Please note, Burlington Electric is seeking to hire one person to join the team. In addition to this posting, we will consider a 3rd Year Apprentice Lineworker or a Lineworker 1st Class A.
Essential Job Functions
- Safely operate BED distribution vehicles such as digger derricks, bucket trucks and various other vehicles used in the installation, maintenance and removal or underground and overhead electrical lines, equipment and apparatus.
- Safely operate other related equipment used in the installation and maintenance of the BED distribution system such as hoists, rope blocks, chain jacks, chain saws, hydraulic presses and cutters, two way radios, fresh air ventilators, gas detectors, phase rotation, ampere and ohm meters and underground cable locators.
- Under the direction of a BED qualified lineworker or supervisor, install, remove, maintain and repair all associated apparatus used in the construction and maintenance of BED’s electric distribution system on energized singe-phase and three-phase primary systems.
- Assist other qualified lineworkers in distribution system restoration caused by storm related occurrences.
- Install, repair and troubleshoot single and three phase services.
- Perform switching and tagging to a 1b level on BED’s distribution system.
- Assist in the installation and maintenance of BED’s underground and overhead distribution system.
- Install single-phase and three-phase transformers and associated hardware under the direction of a qualified BED lineworker.
- Install three-phase transformer banks and associated hardware under the direction of a qualified BED lineworker.
- Operate various electrical disconnecting devices. Install and connect a diverse number of street and leased lights.
- Have a working knowledge of BED’s distribution system feeder maps.
- Perform pole top and bucket truck rescue.
- Assist with job site preparation.
- Climb poles.
- Perform the duties of a groundworker when required.
- Perform on-call responsibilities.
- Enrolled in and maintain a passing grade in any assigned training program associated with completing apprenticeship training (ex. Attending NEPPA Apprenticeship training program).

- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Be enrolled in or have completed an approved apprentice lineworker program.
- Have successfully completed three (3) years as an apprentice lineworker or have equivalent experience.
- Have a working knowledge of commonly used Burlington Electric line practices, characteristics and standards.
- Have the ability to obtain and maintain within ninety (90) days of employment CPR and First Aid certification.
- Have the ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A within ninety (90) of employment.
- Have a working knowledge of Burlington Electric safety rules.
- Adhere to safety policies and procedures including wearing safety equipment (e.g. safety glasses, rubber gloves and sleeves, rescue harness, heavy construction boots, etc.).
- Ability to work in a team oriented environment.
- Regular attendance is necessary and is essential to meeting the expectations of the job functions.
- Ability to understand and comply with City standards, safety rules and personnel policies.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Ability to work in and around energized, high voltage equipment, in accordance with all applicable safety rules.
- Must be able to work in high places.
- Must reside within 45 minutes of the 585 Pine Street facility.
- Ability to work overtime as needed consistent with the provisions of the BED/IBEW Collective Bargaining Agreement.
