The Town of Apex is seeking a motivated experienced professional to lead the Public Works Department as its next Public Works Director. This Director is a trusting servant leader with impressive interpersonal skills who is a natural at building a team environment with high staff morale and a sense of pride. The next Public WorksDirector must be effective in communicating with diverse stakeholders and advocating for the needs of the Department while ensuring sustainable and reliable delivery of public works services to the entire community. Additionally, this Director is a natural collaborator with a successful history of building bridges, seeking win-win solutions where divergent interests lie; and generating commitment and enthusiasm for the strategic vision of the Town. This position is for a hands-on public works leader who nurtures the worth and value of each employee through establishing cohesive values and a collective mission, while balancing adequate office time with the need to be present at project sites. With a budget of $3.4 million, the Public Works Department is responsible for Fleet and Facility Maintenance, Solid Waste Collection (Bulk Items & Yard Waste), and Streets & Sign Maintenance. Solid Waste (trash and recycling) and Janitorial services are currently contracted. The Public Works Director will lead a department of 51 full-time employees including five direct reports. This professional will be eager to immerse him/herself in the community, effectively manage resources and be adept at service delivery and management – ensuring successful and proactive delivery of programs and services within communities. This Director is an excellent problem solver - someone who is adaptable, proactive, and responsive with demonstrated customer service, financial stewardship, and project management skills. The Public Works Director will have impeccable financial and budget management skills and will support community maintenance and growth through collaborative efforts with other departments. The Public Works Director will work closely with the Town’s Water Resources Director bridging gaps between the departments and improving collaboration and coordination across teams. Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in engineering, business administration, public administration, or a related field. A minimum of 10 years of increasingly responsible experience in Public Works, engineering, facilities management, or related field, including at least 5 years of supervisory responsibility in government public works or engineering is required. Registration as Professional Engineer in North Carolina preferred. Salary and Benefits: The hiring range for the position is $125,000 - $150,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
