Harris County is transforming the way we do government and is seeking an experienced, dynamic, and motivated leader to serve as the first Director, Office of Sustainability within the newly formed Office of County Administration. The Director will be responsible for implementing the goals, priority outcomes, and strategic plans of the Commissioners Court in the areas of climate and sustainability.
The primary responsibility of this role will be leading the effort to benchmark internal emissions, set goals and targets, launch the creation of a Harris County Climate & Justice Action Plan and bring the lens of sustainability to all of the County’s operations. The Director will be presented with a tremendous opportunity to shape the response to the climate and sustainability challenge faced by Harris County residents. Initially, the Director will coordinate staff resources from across Harris County departments and Commissioners Precincts who are best suited to act on climate and sustainability initiatives. The department may grow over time as its initial goals are achieved.
The successful candidate will excel at solving complex operational and structural challenges, such as managing large-scale, internal change and a large number of stakeholders. The Director must be a multi-faceted and resourceful leader with a passion for public service and the ability to thrive in ambiguity. , The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with environmental, energy and sustainability systems and the acumen to successfully navigate complex obstacles.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Establish the vision, goals, objectives, and success metrics of the Office of Sustainability
Build strong and collaborative relationships with the Commissioners Court and County departments
Provide data, analysis, and recommendations to Commissioners Court regarding progress to date on primary objectives
Develop a benchmark, target and strategic plan to reduce internal emissions
Manage the development of a Climate Action Plan based on best practices and a strong element of community input
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Environmental Science and Sustainability, Environmental Management, Environmental Law, Public Policy, Government, or a related field
Experience as an environmental science, energy or sustainability professional (5 years)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Excellent verbal and written skills
Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
Leadership experience of newly formed organizations and teams
Intermediate skills using Windows Software Applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and databases

Advanced degree in environmental science and sustainability, environmental management, environmental law, public policy, government, or a related field

Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Hours may vary based on needs of the department
Community meetings may occur outside of normal business hours
