The City of Fairfield is seeking to fill an Engineer position within Traffic Engineering of the Public Works Department. We're looking for someone who is an independent thinker, understands various facets of traffic/transportation engineering, and has knowledge in Synchro/Sim-Traffic or other models. The ideal candidate will focus their efforts working on traffic signal operations such as traffic signal timing, adaptive control systems, communications networks, etc., but welcomes the opportunity to continue to expand their knowledge in all areas of traffic/transportation.

Scheduled salary increase of 4% effective July 2020
CalPERS pension eligibility (2.5% @55 for classic members or 2% @ 62 for new PERS members)
144.86 hours of personal leave annually, which is 100% cashable, plus vacation and sick leave

CHALLENGES YOU MIGHT FACE IN THIS JOB:
Prioritizing the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists, transit, and motorists.
Working to meet the needs of the residents, while balancing other demands.
Understanding and using the Citywide central traffic signal, adaptive system, and advancing the communication network.
Determining how autonomous or connected vehicles could be integrated into the transportation circulation system.
Developing standard operational procedures for field staff.
Examples of Duties:
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Review or prepare traffic control plans, perform field inspections and conduct engineering studies.
Prepare or review all phases of engineering design, plans and specifications for the construction of street lighting, traffic signals/interconnect, signing, striping and pavement markings.
Conduct traffic and transportation studies; design, develop and implement traffic signal timing intelligent transportation systems and communication fiber/copper networks; perform system analysis and provide recommendations to improve signal system effectiveness through field observations or software tools such as Synchro.
Analyze crash and collision analysis of all modes and recommend mitigations to reduce trends.
Meet with residents, contractors, or developers to resolve conflicts involving traffic control devices.
Work with maintenance staff in implementing various traffic control devices.

Placement and salary will be based upon candidate qualifications and complexity of duties performed. Both classifications require a valid California driver's license, current registration as a Civil Engineer in the State of California and a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering.
One (1) year of professional civil engineering experience in the City of Fairfield, or two (2) years of professional civil engineering experience, including experience in the design of public works transportation facilities or development review plan checking as applicable, is required.
Two (2) years of professional civil engineering experience equivalent to an Assistant Civil Engineer with the City of Fairfield or three (3) years of professional civil engineering experience are required. Experience in the public sector, project management, contract administration, consultant selection, regulatory permitting, designing, constructing and / or maintaining municipal infrastructure is highly desirable.
