Under the direction of the Supervisor-ITS and Transportation Engineering, the ITS Communications Networks Administrator assists in acquisition, deployment and maintenance of functional and secure wayside communications networks for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) including troubleshooting and optimization.
The goal of this position is to establish networks that cater to all ITS Communications needs including oversight of deployment of IP based communications networks, backhaul communications systems, Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I), Infrastructure to Center (I2C), Center to Center (C2C) communications and central monitoring systems. Responsible for acceptance testing, maintenance plans, monitoring network performance and field testing. Conduct network communications design review including design submittals approvals. Review Communications Systems Interface with various devices and database servers and asses network security. Develop ITS Network scalability plans including use of stakeholder (IDOT and County DOT’s) fiber optic networks. Responsible for ITS Network Administration including maintaining ITS communications systems related maintenance warranties, contracts and technical documentation. Participate in ITS Communications solutions development process and related meetings. Coordinate with bus electronics and technical services personnel to ensure bus and in-vehicle mobile radio systems health and maintenance. Coordinate with external stakeholders regarding C2C Communications. Assist Supervisor- ITS and Transportation Engineering, in development of ITS Communications Systems Scope/ RFP, Cost Estimates and other procurement activities. Process Invoices and carry out asset management duties. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifying candidate must have a Bachelor's Degree in Telecommunications, Communications, Network Engineering or a related field. Must have at least three years of Telecommunications or ITS Industry related experience as a network/ communications engineer or network administrator. Must have experience in Communications Systems deployment and wayside maintenance. Experience using communications infrastructure monitoring software such as Nagios or similar software. Understanding of NTCIP/ TCP/IP, routing protocols and experience in V2I, I2C and C2C communications protocols and technologies. Exposure to onboarding new applications MS Azure /AWS/Oracle/Openstack Cloud is preferred. Must be proficient in computer word processing programs and computer applications to the extent required by specific job functions. Strong ability to learn new technologies in a short time is preferred.
