Overview / Responsibilities Wood currently has an opportunity for an Environmental Biologist/Scientist Internship with our Denver, CO Environmental team. This is an exciting opportunity for candidates interested in pursuing a career in Environmental Biology/Science. The Intern will gain hands-on experience working in the field following scientific protocol using current technology. The intern will assist with baseline surveys, rare plant and wildlife surveys for Environmental Assessments, sampling efforts in support of remediation activities, and assist with wetland and waters delineations. The Intern will work closely with a team of scientists and travel throughout Colorado and the western US. The internship is expected to start in April/May and end in August, with flexibility of start and end dates to accommodate school schedules.
Key Responsibilities •The position is approximately 70% field work and 30% office work on a variety of projects, including commercial, industrial, state and federal sites •Biology field activities may include plant and wildlife identification, threatened and endangered species surveys, wetland and waters of the U.S. surveys, native plant surveys etc. •Candidates will utilize GIS data, GPS, Collector for ArcGIS, flora and fauna field guides, quad maps and/or aerial photographs •Office work involves researching literature and regulatory requirements; preparing reports, field guides, and maps; and organizing and editing GIS data •Candidates will prepare field reports, internal correspondence, and sections of formal reports •Candidates will be required to closely follow company and site safety standards in accordance with Wood policy •Candidates will travel to project sites throughout Colorado and the western US, with the majority of work in Colorado and Nevada •Other environmental field activities may include soil and groundwater sampling, site investigations, and remediation activities •Will lift and carry equipment and samples that may weigh up to about 30 pounds
Skills / Qualifications Role Requirements •Enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program related to Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science or related scientific discipline or technical field •Attention to detail, self-starter with excellent written and verbal communication skills •Understanding of basic or standard field procedures and techniques •Strong computer skills for database work and proficiency in MS Office •Strong organization and time management skills in order to assist with timely completion, organization and coordination of tasks for projects •Demonstrate experience working successfully in a team environment •Willingness to work outside normal business hours as required, possibly including weekend work •Willingness to work outside in inclement weather conditions and in remote areas •Willingness to travel to project sites in Colorado and surrounding states; Average travel ranges from 2-10 days overnight •Must pass drug test, physical, background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving policy
Preferred Qualifications •Western US fauna and/or flora knowledge and experience •Experience with Collector for ArcGIS •Experience with ArcGIS 10.4 or ArcGIS Pro •Bureau of Land Management and/or US Forest Service project experience •Knowledge or experience with USFWS permits for T&E species surveys, NEPA, Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act threatened and endangered species survey experience, Section 404 of the Clean Water Act delineating/permitting experience
Physical Demands •Field activities may require working in unfavorable weather conditions •Ability to hike, lift equipment (up to 30 lbs.) and willingness to work extended hours (10+ hour days), as needed
