Kimley-Horn is seeking an experienced traffic engineer to join our team at the City of Austin’s Traffic Management Center (TMC). The Kimley-Horn staff located at the City of Austin TMC is responsible for all operations from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the weekdays, 9 a.m to 6 p.m. or 10 a.m to 6 p.m. on the weekends. As such, we interact with maintenance personnel to respond to trouble calls, collect data for senior-level city managers, report performance metrics, develop standard operating procedures, and support signal operations engineers responsible for the north, central, and south areas.
TMC staff have the opportunity to interact with city staff in preparing for, and participating, in many city-wide special events such as UT Football Games, Austin City Limits (ACL), South by Southwest (SXSW), F-1, and many others. This is a grass-roots position that is integral to efficient operations of the city’s signals, cameras, DMS, and Bluetooth travel time collection devices. This position works in a team environment to make sure that safety, congestion, and mobility are top priority within the city of Austin.
This position will report to senior traffic operations engineers and will supervise younger TMC operators. We welcome you to join a team of professionals in an exciting environment. The successful candidate will work on cutting-edge transportation tasks and projects focused on arterial traffic signal systems, help with configuration of CCTV cameras, vehicle detection technology, adaptive signal timing plan analysis, development of special event timing plans, and perform some operations analysis.
BS in Civil Engineering
At least 1-2 years of traffic engineering experience
Experience with operations analysis
Knowledge of Synchro, VISSIM and/or other traffic analysis software applications
Interest in learning all aspects of signal controllers & signal cabinets
Signal design experience
Ability to learn multiple new software tools
Ability to effectively communicate at all levels of an organization
Ability to manage & mentor staff
Ability to interact comfortably with the client
Master’s in Transportation/Traffic Engineering
Professional Engineering License, or the ability to obtain with 1 year
Signing and pavement marking design
ITS planning, design, and implementation experience
